Learning

At our school, we teach the NSW curriculum and offer many different subjects to support each student’s learning. We know that development of skills in literacy and numeracy are the building blocks for learning and for everyday life. Our teachers use effective teaching strategies to help students achieve their goals.

Religion and ethics

At our school, students can take part in special religious education (SRE) or special education in ethics (SEE) classes, depending on what’s available. These classes are delivered by approved providers.

When enrolling your child, you’ll be able to choose an option from the approved providers offered at our school. Students not attending SRE or SEE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.

You’re welcome to change your choice at any time. Just let us know in writing or through the  online form.

Visit the  department’s website  for more information about religion and ethics.

At Girraween High School, special religious education is delivered once a week for 7-10 students (Thursday Period 4). Parents will be issued an information note prior to commencement of special religious education classes.

The following SRE classes are offered at Girraween High School:

Catholic St Anthony's Catholic Church, Toongabbie
Combined Christian SRE Holroyd Christian Ministers Fellowship
Islam

Islamic Council of NSW

Islamic Information

During the time that special religious education classes are being held, students not participating will remain in their classrooms with their class teachers and will participate in meaningful activities.

Voluntary student activities of a religious nature

Voluntary student activities of a religious nature in schools (VSA) are not part of Special Religious Education. Girraween High School has a VSA group that meets at lunchtime on Thursdays, cordinated by an external provider. Students are required to return a permission note to attend this group.  The sessions include students participating in Christian readings from the Bible, reflection and discussion about Christian views with the beliefs and viewpoints of all students respected.

Our learning approach

Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.

Learning at our school is student-centred, inclusive and practical. We are committed to equity and access. We support all learning styles and needs. Our teachers use proven teaching strategies. They take part in ongoing professional development to stay up to date with best teaching practice.
